Add Music to Myspace

Category: Myspace

Have you ever visited a friend's Myspace profile and they had some cool music playing when the profile is displayed? Here's how you can add music to your Myspace profile...

Adding Music to Your Myspace Profile

myspace music
Here's how to make a song play when people visit your Myspace profile. First, login to your Myspace profile. Now look for the Music link near the top of the screen, between Videos and Classifieds. Click on the Music link and you'll go to the MySpace Music. Here you can browse around for cool new bands, or search for one of your favorites. The Search feature lets you search by band name, band members, musical influences, or "sounds like" criteria. You can optionally limit your search to a specific musical genre, or look for bands in a geographical area.

Once you find the group you're looking for, click into their page and you'll see a list of songs that you can listen to, rate, or check out the lyrics. To add a song to your Myspace profile, click on the Add button next to song you like. Myspace will ask if you REALLY want to add this song to your profile. If so, click Add Song To Profile.

That's it! Now visit your Myspace profile, and you'll hear the selected song playing as background music. (Music doesn't start automatically? See Myspace Music Problems.) You'll also see a graphic like this on your profile:

You can click on Delete to remove the song from your Myspace profile, or click on View to visit the artist's Myspace page. See my profile on Myspace (http://www.myspace.com/bobrankin) to see an example of this in action.

Adding a Sound Clip to Your Myspace Profile

You can also add a sound clip to your Myspace profile that plays automatically. First, visit http://www.webplaces.com/html/sounds.htm and find a sound clip you like. There are thousands of sound clips linked to this site -- everything from classical music to animal sounds to bathroom noises and more. Save the sound clip to your hard drive, then upload it to your own personal web space. (If you can't do that, please get permission from the owner of the sound clip website to access the file directly from that server.) Once you have the web address of the sound clip, insert it in this template, replacing http://www.example.com/sample.wav with your sound clip address.

<embed allowScriptAccess="never" src="http://www.example.com/sample.wav" height="60" width="145" autostart="true" loop="false"> <noembed> <bgsound src="http://www.example.com/sample.wav" loop="false"> </noembed> </embed>

Now edit the I'd Like to Meet section of your profile and paste the above code there. Visit your Myspace profile, and you'll hear the selected sound clip play. You'll also see a graphic like this on your profile:

You can click on the controls to replay the sound clip or pause it. Visit my profile on Myspace (http://www.myspace.com/bobrankin) to see an example of the sound clip player in action. If you want to remove the sound clip from your Myspace profile, edit the profile and remove the code that was added to the I'd Like to Meet section.

NOTE: (Jan 18 2007) There's a Myspace bug affecting the addition of EMBED code to a profile. If you're following the instructions above, and the code is coming out jumbled, it's not your fault. Hopefully Myspace will fix this problem soon...

NOTE: (Jan 23 2007) Myspace has fixed the problem, sort of... You can add a music player to your page, but it will not play in the Firefox browser. Internet Explorer seems to work fine. I did notice that Myspace changes the EMBED code above to an ugly looking OBJECT tab (which at least works in IE), and puts two dots ".." where the EMBED tags were. You can re-edit the profile and remove the dots if you like.

NOTE: (Feb 05 2007) One solution which seems to work in both IE and Firefox is http://boomp3.com. You can select or upload a song, then copy and paste the Flash player code they provide. Autostart doesn't seem to work, though.

NOTE: (Apr 23 2007) I found a solution for the Autostart problem. You can add a <param> statement to the OBJECT code. Try <param name="autostart" value="true" /> OR <param name="autostart" value="false" />

Adding Music from Your Hard Drive to Myspace

So many people have asked me how to use a song from their hard drive in a Myspace profile, so I decided to write a separate article detailing what you need to do. For complete details, see Add Hard Drive Music to Myspace.

I have tried to upload an MP3 track of mine onto my myspace music page. Myspace states file is too large. How do you resize to make music file smaller? Thanks. Lisa.

EDITOR'S NOTE: You can try the free Audacity program for editing audio files.

I did everything as you said and it refused to work. Then I read in these comments that it does not work with Firefox. Works fine on IE. Bob, please add a note to the instructions telling people that it does not work when the myspace page is browsed with Firefox! Thanks for the code!

Hi, I used your code to add music to my myspace page using a hotlink. It worked great! But the player, which is black and blue, does not match my color scheme. How can I change the look of the player? Could you please be as specific as possible, maybe post some code, so that I don't go wrong?

EDITOR'S NOTE: I don't know if that's possible...

Another free and easy way to add background music to your Myspace profile is described here: http://www.neosounds.com/freewebmusic

You just put a small code and it generates a flash player with embedde music on your webpage.
